Freeman’s Downtown

Freeman’s Downtown (Casual Dining, 1726 Grafton), visited September 29. Always an enjoyable meal, and the server let us have the nightly special – taquitos - before its official start time. Said taquitos tasted more like grilled rolled up quesadillas, or even grilled cheese fingers, but whatever they were, they were good! We tried the House Specialty pizza - Italian sausage, tomato, bell pepper and feta (substituting hot peppers instead of red onion). It's not the most conventional combo, but it was absolutely loaded and worked nicely. Verdict: 4/5 (80%) chance of returning.

Pizza Girls

Pizza Girls (Pizza, 1560 Grafton), visited September 29. A considerably big slice with good sauce (it featured an interesting spice), a decent amount of toppings, and a good taste overall. Unfortunately, it wasn’t particularly fresh. We expect the crust would have been much softer and tastier had it come right out of the oven. We were also perplexed that a beverage purchase was required, making this one of the priciest big slices on the peninsula. Verdict: 3/5 (60%) chance of returning.

King Of Donair

King Of Donair (Pizza, 6420 Quinpool), visited September 26. A Halifax institution. Our slice came right out of the oven so it was piping hot and the cheese had an impressive stretch. Unfortunately, the crust tasted a bit burnt, which impacted the overall flavour, but still a good slice. Verdict: 3.5/5 (70%) chance of returning.

Morris East Slice Shop

Morris East Slice Shop (Pizza, 1984 Vernon), visited September 26. Morris East is a great spot as is, but the Slice Shop is a cool idea – a chance to snag a slice of premium pizza to go. It was a little pricey and on the smaller side of the slice spectrum, but it was delicious, with an excellent crust that fuses great flavour, texture and the right amount of chewiness. Everything on this Lumberjack slice just worked. Yum! Verdict: 4/5 (80%) chance of returning.

PZZA.CO-HFX

PZZA.CO-HFX (website here) (Pizza, 3450 Joseph Howe), visited September 26. We’re genuinely perplexed by their moniker – one might reasonably think it was their URL, but it’s actually not. Anyway, whatever. The slice was a decent size with fluffy crust and tasted pretty good overall, although the sauce was a little tinny. Verdict: 3/5 (60%) chance of returning.

Look Ho Ho

Look Ho Ho (Chinese, 6420 Bayers), visited September 25. We were pretty hungry so we got take-out and forgot to snap a picture. We ordered the C4 (Egg Roll, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Chicken Chop Suey) and C8 (Egg Roll, Beef with Broccoli, Beef Fried Rice). It was your standard North American Chinese food – nothing spectacular, but it was decent and enough to fill us up. We were sad they didn’t include fortune cookies, but they scored points for giving us food in reusable containers. Verdict: 2.5/5 (50%) chance of returning.

Alexandra's Pizza

Alexandra’s Pizza (Pizza, 1735 Grafton), visited September 18. J has historically struggled with Alexandra’s – many people swear by it, but he’d never really understood the hype…until now. He was genuinely perplexed once the slice was finished, as he didn’t expect it to be that good. But, it was! Great taste, lots of toppings, a generous amount of cheese – everything worked together exceptionally well, it was big, and there was even a discounted daytime price. There was so much to love here. Verdict: 4.5/5 (90%) chance of returning.
