Peninsula Pizza Project Part II: The Method Behind The Madness


Over
the summer and fall of 2020, we set out to try and find the best slice of pizza in town and unveiled the results of the @hfxfoodreviews Peninsula Pizza Project 2020 over at Eat This Town, the home of numerous epic local food quests. But, the conclusion of that initiative didn’t mean we were finished with pizza… 

Slices are one thing, but heading out for a nice meal at a pizzeria is a different story. And trust us, there are some mighty fine pizzerias in Halifax. Of course, we couldn’t visit most of them for a while, thanks to COVID-19 pandemic-related shutdowns. However, one of the first places we visited when dine-in restrictions were first lifted in June was La Piazza. In fact, it was that evening that our idea for the whole Peninsula Pizza Project came to fruition. 

We teamed up with Eat This Town again to unveil the results of the Peninsula Pizza Project Part II, which you can find here, but we wanted to provide some extra context through a post on our own site. 

When considering what makes a good slice, we came up with the concept of the “Venn Diagram of Pizza” – most are either good, big or cheap. Occasionally, you’ll find one that’s two of the three. Then, we wondered: is there a slice of pizza in Halifax that is all three? (yes, one did!). With that being said, we felt that sit-down meals at pizzerias couldn’t be judged by the exact same criteria, so we modified our “Pizzagram” for Part II and focused on the taste, value, and overall experience (i.e. service, ambiance, presentation, etc). 

Our parameters were as follows:  

  • Since J grew up in the heart of the city (and still lives in the area), we decided to make this a peninsula-wide thing, using Joseph Howe Drive as the border. We meticulously researched which restaurants are best known for their pizza and/or had at least 8 kinds of pizza on their menus, and whose major focus is as a dine-in restaurant.  
  • We decided against including major national chains, as well as anywhere that focuses the bulk of their business on slices and/or delivery.  
  • Ultimately, we came up with 12 local pizzerias. We’re very sorry if we missed anyone – we did our best to make this as comprehensive and inclusive of a project as possible, and just about every single pizzeria on the peninsula appeared on either the slice or eat-in components of our Peninsula Pizza Project – 34 in total!  
  • We always visited between the hours of 5-6pm, when one might reasonably expect a restaurant to be fully staffed.  
  • Unlike the slice challenge, we ordered whatever we saw on the menu that looked appealing to us, usually adding one or two appetizers and/or a dessert – taking notes and a photo of the vast majority of the dishes. Photos and individual reviews are available via the links at the bottom of this post.  
  • After visiting each of the 12 restaurants, we arranged our challenge bracket based on comparability – in other words, we tried to pit the first-round challengers against another restaurant whose pizza was relatively comparable in style.  
  • We compared each meal using our revised Pizzagram– each restaurant received a score out of 5 for value, a score out of 5 for overall experience, and a score out of 10 for taste (because, ultimately, that's what should matter the most, isn't it?). If there was any doubt – and sometimes there was – we asked ourselves: If given the choice, which pizzeria would we prefer to visit again?  
  • The winners advanced to the Quarterfinals, which were arranged randomly – there was no rhyme or reason to their placement. We didn’t visit the restaurants again, though – we used our notes from the previous round to populate the rest of the bracket. Quarterfinal winners moved on to the Semifinals, and so on.  
  • When we reached the Quarterfinals, we advanced one pizzeria from each side of the bracket that had lost in an earlier close battle (a “Bad Break”) to the opposite side of the Quarterfinals bracket. The victors moved on to the Semifinals, then four became two in the Finals, where we crowned the champion…which you can find out more about on Eat This Town here.
  • To assist with the bracket, we entered our data into a spreadsheet, gave each pizzeria a score and rank for each category, and then added up the scores.

As you can see, some of the top scores were pretty close and, frankly, we were a little surprised by some of the results – a few fared far better than we’d expected, while others weren’t quite as good as we’d anticipated.
