The Dancing Goat (Café, 6289 Cabot Trail, Margaree Valley), visited October 2. Highly recommended by a colleague, we stopped by for a Kicked Up Bacon Avocado sandwich and a mint chocolate cupcake. We made the mistake of eating on the patio, where there were scores of spider webs overhead. Regardless, the food was lovely! Verdict: 3.5/5 (70%) chance of returning.

Road Trip: Rusty Anchor
Rusty Anchor (Casual Dining, 23197 Cabot Trail, Pleasant Bay), visited October 1. We’d never heard of Cape Breton style Fish and Chips, but M gave it a whirl. Turns out it means the fish is dipped in egg and pan fried instead of being battered – it was different, but not bad. J’s Chicken Club was ok, but extremely heavy on the garlic mayo. Verdict: 3.5/5 (70%) chance of returning.

Road Trip: Freight Shed
Freight Shed (Casual Dining, 2 Jones, Baddeck), visited October 1. We didn’t think the food would be better than the view of Bras d’Or Lake, but we were wrong! Our mains were good – the Reuben sandwich (strangely served with mustard instead of Russian dressing) and Grilled Cheese sandwich – but the stars of the show were the side – the organic side salad was excellent, and the bountiful seafood chowder was among the best M has ever had, and was offered at no extra charge. Verdict: 4.5/5 (90%) chance of returning.

Ela! Greek Taverna
Ela! Greek Taverna (Greek, 215 Chain Lake), visited September 26. A bit pricey, but most Greek fare is around here. For starters, we went with the Saganaki (flaming cheese), which was ok, and the Kopanisti (whipped roasted red pepper and cheese) was plentiful and very tasty. The Pork Souvlaki was pretty standard, while the Lamb Shawarma bowl was sizeable but lacking in oomph. Verdict: 3/5 (60%) chance of returning.

Flynn’s Dairy Bar
Flynn’s Dairy Bar (Deserterie, 5552 Kaye), visited September 19. The Indulge Into Caramel ice cream sandwich was made to order, and involved vanilla ice cream sandwiched between a couple of chocolate chip cookies and drizzled with caramel sauce. It was brilliantly served with a disposable plastic glove – we were impressed! Verdict: 4/5 (80%) chance of returning.

Lemonade General Store
Lemonade General Store (Variety, 5525 Young), visited September 19. We were in the mood for a picnic, so we stopped by for a charcuterie box made on the spot. Staff had the foresight to ask where it would be consumed, and adjusted it so it could be easily consumed in the nearby Hydrostone Park. It featured a great selection of cheeses, crackers, meats, olives, nuts, spreads and dried fruits brilliantly packaged together in a small pizza box. Verdict: 4.5/5 (90%) chance of returning.

Bread Lounge
Bread Lounge (Café, 5880 Demone), visited September 14. We stopped in for some bread but couldn’t resist sampling the baked goods. The Belgian Multigrain was so good, we could have eaten the entire loaf in one sitting. Strangely, the Boston Cream Pie was inexplicably covered in a Nutella-like icing, which didn’t mesh well with the Boston cream and the ratio of icing to cake was disappointing. The Blueberry Vanilla cake also could have used a bit more icing. Then again, the place is called the Bread Lounge, not the Cake Lounge, so what did we expect? Verdict: 3/5 (60%) chance of returning.

Road Trip: Taco Del Jefe
Taco Del Jefe (Mexican, 10362 Main, Wolfville), visited September 11. This little taco truck is situated beside the Elderkin’s Farm Market, making it a convenient stop before, after or during your produce-picking adventures. We went for the Carne Asada, Chicken Tinga and Pork Carnitas tacos with fries and a quesadilla. There’s a nice menu selection, but the tortillas fell apart the second we touched them, and the meat was kinda dry – they really needed some more sauce. Verdict: 3/5 (60%) chance of returning.

Road Trip: Nook and Cranny
Nook and Cranny (Casual Dining, 627 Prince, Truro), visited September 5. We shared the Spinach Dip, Spring Veggie Salad and Nookie Style Mac and Cheese. All were good, but the salad was a little sparse on the “spring veggies” (corn and pickled onion) – then again, it was September! Verdict: 3.5/5 (70%) chance of returning.

Road Trip: BlackRock Bistro
BlackRock Bistro (Casual Dining, 151 Main, Parrsboro), visited September 4. M enjoyed the Seafood fettuccine, which was quite garlicky and pretty packed with seafood. J couldn’t help by try the Donair Panini and, well, it was just ok. It tasted more like meatloaf than it did donair meat, and the lack of donair sauce made it pretty dry. Verdict: 3.5/5 (70%) chance of returning.

Road Trip: Fletcher’s Restaurant
Fletcher’s Restaurant (Diner, 337 Prince, Truro), visited September 4. A standard bustling diner with good service and value for the money. We tried the Club Wrap with onion rings and the Big Boss Burger with warm kettle chips – both of which were pretty good. Verdict: 4/5 (80%) chance of returning.

Los Amigos Taqueria
Los Amigos Taqueria (Mexican, 2605 Agricola), visited September 2. The Adobada and Carne Asada tacos were good, the Carnitas made us drool, but the Chicken taco delivered quite a surprise – it tasted kinda like high quality chicken nuggets with pimento cheese, pickles and coleslaw, and it really worked! But by far, the showstopper was the Carne Asada fries – basically a massive Mexican poutine with a cilantro aioli that haunts our dreams. So damn good. Verdict: 4.5/5 (90%) chance of returning.
